Design for the little ones

I am all for designer clothes for kids, especially if Phillip Lim is involved! I kind of wish it all came in my size! (I'm not that tall after all...) Via seesaw

NYC crica 1940

Waaaay before Instagram, Charles Weever Cushman in 1941 and 1942 left us these fabulous images of a time where men wore hats, and ladies wore knee length skirts as National Uniforms. More here.

A couple of weeks ago, we had the chance to attend the opening night of the Alberta Ballet's season,  with the National Ballet of Canada's 60th anniversary tour. To say it completely blew our minds would kinda be an understatement. It was fantastic, but mostly it was real. Especially the Emmergence ballet choreographed by Crystal Pite.

The talent, dedication and grace of the dancers just transported us to another world. It was raw, human, and truly impressive. No special effects, no photoshop, no autotunes, it was pure talent and art at its finest. It's something I think we don't get to see enough, or maybe don't value enough these days. We go to the movies, see scenes that might have took 30 takes to nail, and then were color adjusted, the image was tweaked etc. Same goes for most of the images we see, or the music we hear. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to achieve perfection, or the art of digital enhancement of any kind. But I think we underestimate the value of seeing live performances, with their flaws, put on by people who dedicate their lives to perfect the art of showmanship. It is a truly humbling and human experience that we should all try to get more of, and value more.

So,  go out and see a live band in a small venue, a play, a ballet, modern dance, circus, whatever you like, but see it live, for real. And then, tell me what you thought! Enjoy! ;)

These neat images by Swiss artist Ursus Wehrli  for his book called The Art of Clean Up, really calm the OCD part of me, you know, when you suddenly feel the urge to organize everything in nice pretty rows, or in neat little spaces....Am I the only one feeling like that sometimes? Like how a spent 2 precious hours of last weekend organizing books by color, then subject, then title... Well, ok seeing  it in words actually sounds pretty ridiculous I must admit...
Anyways, we all have certain things we're very particular about, what's yours?

IknowIknow...

Hello all!
I know I've been away for a while, but I have a good reason! I am very busy at work! Ye! I got a job! But don't worry, I'll still try to upload nice, fun, and interesting things here as much as I can! I just have to find my groove, and get on top of that learning curve, I hear the view is much nicer up there! :)

New in our Jukebox

Latest tracks by theheadandtheheart

Last weekend was Calgary's Folk Fest, and it was a really fun time!! A full weekend of riding our bikes to the park for amazing music under the sun, with friends, sampling great food, what could be better? Even though there was lots of good shows from various talented artists, my highlight is definitely a Seattle band called  The head and the Heart that got everyone up on their feet the whole show! I just got their album on iTunes, and it's been on repeat since. That's how much I like it.  I feel I should also mention that Joel Plaskett and Coeur de Pirate's respective shows were amazing ! I already miss Folk Fest...

A great summer movie!

Ceremony is a touching story about crazy, irrational love and true friendship. It's set in a breathtaking cottage on a beach, with a eclectic, free spirited, over the top group of people. The styling, decor and attention to detail take you on a beautiful journey, where the story line almost stop being important, just because everything you see is so pretty and unique. I wish I get invited to such an enchanting week-end one day! I highly recommend you pour yourself a nice iced tea in a crystal glass, and just let yourself be carried away by Ceremony.

Who you need to know now

Meet Lana Del Rey, self proclaimed "Gangsta Nancy Sinatra" is making big waves in the UK! Following the trend of powerful rich voices like Adele's and Amy Winehouse's, she brings a playful vintage vibe that is sure to make you tap you feet and put a smile on your face! I absolutely love it! The video above is " Kinda outta Luck" it starts slow, but quickly becomes awesome! Her current hit in the UK is "Video Games", you should also check out " Diet MTN Dew " .

"Baby put on heart shapes sunglasses 'cause we're gonna go for a ride!"- Lana Del Rey :)

ahhh Summer...

What a great time we had! There is something so reinvigorating about spending time in the sun, breathing fresh air, eating from the local land, running in vineyards, hanging out with a two year old... It was a fun filled little vacation!

Ps: not an actual photo of our trip, unfortunately! It's via every day I show, a great source of stunning vintage images!

Wurst, it's really not that bad!

A few weeks ago, we tried a new restaurant in Mission, called Wurst, and it was the best! We were there the second night the place was in operation and everything was seamless! The service was great, the food was good and the ambiance was electric! What a refreshing experience it is to dine under giant trees, pick from an original German menu, and an interesting wine and beer selection. You can even arrange to have them keep your own stein!  After dinner, make your way downstairs for a few drinks in a very laid back ambiance. It's also a great spot for people watching (oh come on, we all do it!), folks looked really good!

Link to the restaurant here, online reservation available.

image by Kristian Schuller via wolf and willow.

Why not add a bit of glamour to our lives this week-end, shall we? No fancy events planned? No worries,  why don't you try wearing a pretty dress to do grocery shopping? It'll lift your mood up, probably get people to smile nicely at you, and make the world a prettier place! Just have fun with it!

Delicious, stylish groceteria!

While taking a stroll in Inglewood last week-end, we came across what I'd describe as Calgary's foodie heaven! Bite Groceteria is a cute imported product fine grocery store with a hand picked  selection ranging from dry goods as wild rice and fancy couscous to an amazing selection of spices, cold cut meat, cheese, pickled veggies and so much more. Go there and get inspired by the pretty packaging and the mouth watering smells, it just makes you want to cook something fantastic! I couldn't resist the wild rice, the pickled balsamic and clove beets (delicious!) and I also got stuffed vine leafs...that disappeared before the photo shoot!

Summer chic done right!

Anthropologie's new summer catalog is filled with amazing summer outfits, but what really caught my eye is this delicate blouse paired with cute cargo shorts. Chic, yet casual it's perfect for the warm week-ends ahead! Love it!

Fun project for green thumbs!

Here is my next project: a terrarium! I love these little worlds under glass, a fun alternative to a regular plant plus I bet they'd look great just about anywhere in the house, or as a table center piece!

This weekend...

Sometimes, things just don't go according to plan... We all know that, but let's try to make the most of what comes our way this weekend, make it fun, make it work! From my experience, that always makes for the best times, greatest outcomes,  and most cherishable memories. Carpe diem you guys!

DIY Lamp, do it!

Since I started the day with a post for you, manly readers, I thought it could be fun to follow up with a cool DIY project! You know, so you can get in touch with your masculinity and build stuff...
I picked this project for 3 reasons: 1) it looks great! 2) You don't need tools, just pliers 3)you can get creative and really make it your own by changing the design, the materials, etc. .

For the full step by step guide, including you shopping list, check out the very talented Linsey Adelman Studio webpage. Here, is a direct link to this project.

Have fun!

PS.: Ladies, it's also a project you can tackle easy, just don't tell the boys!

Gentlemanly gorgeous!

Here is a nice selection of men's grooming, washing, all around beautifying products that all are good for you, manly readers, as well as for the planet! I didn't really intend to do a green post, but it turns out all my favorites are also environment conscious, look at that!

Champagne on ice please!

The world renowned Moët & Chandon as come up with something new and fresh for the summer! They have created the first champagne that is best enjoyed on ice, introducing the Moët Ice Imperial.
The maison recommends chilling the bottle to 7 'C (or 45'F), pick a large glass (like the cute Kate Spade champagne saucers above),  put 3 large ice cubes, add champagne, garnish with mint, ginger, berries or citrus peel, which ever you prefer. You could also put the garnish in your ice cube, for a fancy touch!
Cheers!

a pretty way to organize books!

I really prefer this organization technique to the classic alphabetical order. Plus, it's easier to maintain!

Elle UK's covers are always awesome, but this one really hits the mark for me, stunning!

fashion lesson: colorful pants!

Colorful pants seems to be the item of the season, but it's not that easy to pull off! Artizia posted J. Brand's jean lesson on their (very interesting) blog and I thought it was absolutely perfect!
The celeb's pictures show a great way to pair colors avoiding the "Spice girl, 1990" look! Using pastels or basic plain colors on top is the trick! Also, the ankle length ads a modern, european feel and allows you to show off those summer shoes!

A quick word on J.Brand jeans: absolute love. They have been my go-to jeans for years now, and I can't tell you how much I like them, and how many compliments they drove my way!

JBrand's jeans are around 170 $, and can be found at Artizia, Holt Renfrew, and many select boutiques.
If you're looking for more budget friendly options, I saw great hues at Zara.

here we go!

Gorgeous Alexa Chung from ELLE UK,

The pic above pretty much describes me these days, lots going on!  So I'm moved in our new house, in a new city! Ok, our stuff is still in transit, so the move is not totally completed, but here I am. I'm very excited to settle in a new city, discover what my new neighborhood is made of, find new restaurants, new stores, new places to hang out... As much as I will miss my Montreal favorites, I'm eager to discover what will be my Calgary favorites!

I'm also very thrilled to have to whole house to decorate! Don't be surprised if you find a little more interior decorating post in here for the upcoming weeks.. hope you like it!

I'll also round up my Montreal favorite's here pretty soon, you should definitely check them out, or take note for your next visit in La Belle Province!

Overwhelmed? Yes. Nostalgic? Yes. Terrified? Nah, maybe a little... Excited? Most definitly! I'm learning a lot on myself these days. On saying bye, on leaving, and on planning for a new future! I'll let you know more when we are settled in! See you on the other side of the country!

Marc Jacob in... Prada?

Featured in the latest issue of Industrie, Marc Jacob in Prada!
Oh so playfull!
Of course I like Marc dressing in Prada very much. I think he is very brave and, most of all, he looks completly acceptable and elegant. He has a real spirit and I like his work . – Miuccia Prada

Mr. Beckham & Adele, perfect couple.

Hummm, not only is there eye candy in this new glossy, but there are actually very interesting and thoughtful articles, interviews and opinion pieces. Male celebrities, intellectuals, style icons from all over the world are carefully hand picked to create a forward thinking magazine, with unique perspective.
The website is updated regularly and features some interviews and great photographs.
Created in Amsterdam, its sister publication, The Gentlewoman is also a great read for ladies. Especially since this issue features a great and (very) honest interview with my current favorite artist, Adele.
What is also great about the women's publication is that it has the same smart and intellectual tone as its masculine counterpart. Beauty, fashion and anti-aging are still part of the topics, but in a wise approach, with interesting comments and reflexions. Intellectuals, artists, pop icons and women from different backgrounds fill the pages of this new mag. Love it!
(* If in Mtl, you get both at Multimag on Mont-Royal, and other fine stores I'm sure).

How inspiring are these images from Chance's new collection? I feel as relaxed as I would on a French seaside just by looking at them. Their summer line is simple, elegant, with a unmistakable je ne sais quoi. Stripes, solid colors, linen and a super cute selection of accesories are available on the web.

Weekend celebration!

We had a great time at Diese Onze Jazz bar last night! We loved the food, the wine and the very talented band who gave an outstanding show. There is something about a dark, candle lit jazz bar that is so extremely romantic. We call these night our Dean Martin nights, we dress up, kick the night off with a martini and always, always have a great time!

Lamb chop delight!

Here is my favorite summer meat recipe! It's easy, delicious, and you can make it on the BBQ, in a pan or in the oven.
You'll need:
6 lamb chops
1 cup of chopped parsley (Italian or the normal kind)
Zest of 1 lemon
Juice of 1 lemon
3 crushed garlic cloves
3 tablespoons of olive oil
Salt

Here's the deal, you can totally adapt the quantity of ingredients to your liking and according to the number of lamb chops you will cook. Quanto basta*!

All you need to do is make a paste with all the ingredients and rub it on the meat. Let marinade and chill for about 1 hour then cook! You can cook on the BBQ, in the oven or in the pan. However you do it, you should leave a little bit of pink in the middle of the meat.

Voila! Super easy, and delicious. You can serve with Basmati Rice, BBQ vegetables, French fries or just a nice salad.

Let me know what you think!

* "To your own taste" as David Rocco would say!

Secret, fast, delicious sangria receipe

I'm going to share my secret Portuguese Sangria recipe with you, lucky reader! It's super simple, extremely fast, and even though it may offend hard core sangria fans, it's delicious and everyone loves it!

You'll need:
1 inexpensive bottle of sweet red wine
1/2 litter of Fanta ( Fanta is the best, but any orange pop or Orangina will do).
Fresh fruits sliced (Orange, peach, nectarine etc)
Frozen berries (optional)
Ice.

You'll have to:
Mix it all together, let it chill a little, just the time it takes  to tell your guests that you found this recipe on an awesome blog they should check out. And, bam, it's ready to enjoy!
 * This recipe is best enjoyed during a pic-nic, in these gorgeous Villeroy&Boch cristal glasses.

OK, now for you snazzy drinkers, here's a fancier recipe

1 bottle of merlot
1/2 cup of Grand Marnier
1/3 cup of Peach liqueur

Fresh fruits sliced (Orange, peach, nectarine etc)
Frozen berries
3 cinnamon sticks.
2 cans of 7up or Tonic water
Ice

Mix everything but 7up and ice, Let chill for 1 hour. Add 7up, ice, and remove cinnamon sticks.
Enjoy!

It sometimes really does take a performance to get dressed up!

BARNEYS NEW YORK Showcases The Genius of DAPHNE GUINNESS from Barneys The Window on Vimeo.

The famous Barney's store in NY had the brilliant idea to showcase, in their window,  a performance of the equally famous Daphne Guiness (Heiress for the Guiness family, who amongst other things, owns that beer cie you might know about. She is recognised as a fashion icon, a haute couture collector and an artist). She here getting ready to go to the MET ball.

Anyways, enjoy this poetic performance... After all, every pretty girl deserves to go to a ball!  *

Happy TV!

Ok, it's official, I love the new abc show "Happy endings"! It's fun, quirky, different, with very actual references. Many compared it to Friends, and althought it's not false, I feel like it's more raw and real than friends was.  It's on abc wednesday nights, or click  here to watch full episodes.

Travelling day

I spent today in the air, litterally! We were in Calgary for a couple of days, and we had a blast! We have hours painting the new maison, it's starting to look great! We have also had such good times with our friends out there! We didn't mannage to see everyone, but we'll be back before you know it! There is still a lot to keep us busy here in Montreal, so I'm happy to be back!

web+vintage= awesome shopping

Vintage isn't easy to wear, shop or find in my opinion. That was before I discovered Pink Clouds! A great way to skip the hunt through piles of clothing, the remote stores, and the patience to see what comes in. Plus, the website suggests great looks to pull of the items, they clearly indicate the size by giving detailed measurement of the clothing. Plus plus, they have very interesting and diverse brands! A dream!
But there is a certain paradox about buying vintage clothing online, don't you think?
